William Kamkwamba | Inspirational People

Often, you can come across the story of someone’s life and achievements and be completely and utterly inspired. This is how I felt when I came across William Kamkwamba. William is a truly inspiring man whose intelligence and motivation led him to help others significantly at the age of just 14. So, when I came across his story recently, I wanted to talk about it within the new part of my blog all about inspirational people.

I came across William Kamkwamba through a film that was added to Netflix called ‘The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind’ based on the way he helped his community in its time of struggle. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with his story, I wanted to share it with you today as it is completely inspiring.

William was born in Malawi in 1987 where he lived with his family. He was educated in a nearby primary school however due to a severe famine, his family was unable to fund his schooling and William had to leave school. After leaving school, William decided to educate himself at the local library and read a book called ‘Using Energy’, which gave William inspiration for his first invention.

At the age of 14, William Kamkwamba used his undeniable intelligence and skills as a young inventor to build a windmill made from spare parts that was able to produce electricity and water with the ability to power 4 bulbs and 2 radios. This and further progressions of his invention helped his own family and the wider community.

Many have been inspired by Kamkwamba’s ambition, intelligence and motivation to help those around him, and I am definitely one of them. From researching him further, it is clear the William has continued his work to help others.

For those of you who haven’t seen the film on Netflix and want to learn more about William Kamkwamba’s story, I would 100% recommend watching ‘The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind’.
