Music Monthly Favourites | May 2018

I love discovering new music, or rekindling love for songs I had listened to when I was younger, and this month was definitely a combination of the two. I have been listening to quite a mix of different types of music in May, and thought I’d share them all in a blog post.

• Let’s Get Married – ‘Sunshine on Leith’ (George MacKay, Kevin Guthrie, Michael Keat) •

For my birthday, I went to see ‘Sunshine on Leith’ on stage. For those who don’t know, it is a production based on a film that is set in Leith and Edinburgh, with The Proclaimers music being performed throughout, alongside a great storyline. I had loved the film before I went to see the show, and the show itself was brilliant and a great birthday surprise. My favourite scene was when the song ‘Let’s Get Married’ was performed, and seeing this rekindled my love for an old favourite, upbeat song, as well as the movie itself.

• I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues – Alessia Cara •

On the 30th April in the UK, ‘Elton John: I’m Still Standing – A Grammy Salute’ was aired. This was filled with loads of brilliant singers performing Elton John Songs, from Ed Sheeran singing 'Candle in the Wind' (another song I’ve loved this month) to Alessia Cara’s cover of 'I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues'. This was one of my favourite performances of the night, her voice is incredible, and she did the song such justice, it was a great performance.

• Vienna – Billy Joel •

This song came up as a suggestion from a playlist on Spotify this month, and I haven’t stopped listening to it since. I love this message and meaning that I take from the song; the idea that the opportunities in the world are there for the taking as long as you work hard to get what you would love in life. I also think the lyrics are so clever and the melody itself is so calm and relaxing.

• Travellers Tune – Ocean Colour Scene •

I have absolutely loved listening to songs by Ocean Colour Scene this month and could probably list loads of their songs in my favourites, but this one in particular was top of the list. I think it is such an upbeat song, and one perfect for singing in the car haha! I love songs that lift my mood, and ‘Travellers Tune’ is definitely a new favourite song that does this.

• Sleep Is A Rose – RHODES •

I found this song on my brother’s playlist earlier this month, and I have loved listening to it. it is such a relaxing song and one that I immediately added to my ‘chill’ playlist. Not only is the song calming, but RHODES’ voice is amazing, I think the melody alongside his voice and the simplicity of only having a piano as an instrument makes this song so relaxing and easy to listen to – a top favourite of this month.

• One Day Like This – Elbow •

This song has always been a favourite of mine, but this month-end I found myself listening to it a lot more. On 22nd May, as most people know, there was a gathering of people in Manchester to remember those who fell victim to the attack on Manchester Arena a year previous. At this gathering, lots of music was performed and played for the crowd to sing along to, one song being ‘One Day Like This’ by Elbow. This song is always so uplifting, and I really like the meaning of love behind it. It is such a joyful song, and with the weather getting warmer, I have loved listening to it!

• Friday I’m In Love – The Cure •

I re-found this song whilst watching the film ‘About Time’ – a real favourite movie of mine this month. I have really enjoyed listening to this song again this month, having listened to it when I was younger. I love this music behind the singing (as well as the singing itself of course haha) because it is such a good blend of instruments and creates a real upbeat melody – love it!

• New Light – John Major •

Last but not least, this song has been a favourite of mine also towards the end of the month. I actually found this song on Brooklyn Beckham’s Instagram story – it was playing in the background. Whenever I hear a snippet of music that I like, I always try to find what song it comes from because you can definitely tell from a little bit of a song if it is something you would like to listen to. This is what happened here, and I absolutely love the melody of this song. It is really feel-good, and again great for the warmer weather.

What new songs have you been loving this month? Do you have any recommendations you think I or others would like? I’d love to know in the comments.
