Getting Out of a Rut

Getting Out of a Rut

Sometimes we can find ourselves in a rut. What I mean by this is that we can find ourselves slightly bored with things, uninspired creatively or a little down. Being in a rut doesn’t necessarily mean that you aren’t happy with the way things are, but it can just be a feeling of uncertainty. It is something that can happen every now and then and can be a frustrating feeling to shake. I wanted to write a post today about my advice for getting out of a rut in the hopes that it could help someone who is experiencing it at the moment. So, here are things that have helped my get out of a rut in the past.

Monthly Goals

This is something that I have started to do more recently and would definitely recommend. Writing down monthly goals is a great way to have something to work towards. When I am in a rut, I often feel lacking in direction, and so taking time to write down some goals for the month ahead is something that has been great. Having monthly goals also allows you to reflect and look back on what you have achieved and gives you a chance to recognise small successes as well as the bigger ones. Whatever your goals may be, however big or small, having some written down is fab for giving you a sense of direction and a focus.

Try Something New

Being in a rut doesn’t necessarily mean you have to change things around you, but rather add to the things in life that you already enjoy. Trying something new can be a great way of finding a new passion or learning a new skill, which can in turn lift you out of being in a rut. It could be anything from painting, to sport, to photography; trying out something new can be so great. Joining a club to get involved in a new hobby can also be a fun way to meet new people with similar interests. All in all, trying something new can definitely be helpful in getting out of a rut.

Plan Things In

Planning time with friends and family is always great for allowing yourself time to relax. As well as this, it gives you something to look forward to, which I find so helpful when I am in a rut. If I know I have planned in a fun day at the weekend or a lovely evening in the week, it means I can look forward so spending time with people I love. Often, when I am in a rut, I tend to focus on the fact that I am in a rut rather than the positives. So, making plans with friends and family is another great way of having a positive focus in your week to look forward to. Also, seeing friends can give you a chance to chat about being in a rut and gaining some advice from them.

Being in a rut can definitely be frustrating, so taking steps to bring yourself out of that rut is a really positive thing to do. Setting monthly goals, trying new things and planning time with people I love are all things that have helped me in the past, so I hope they are helpful to you.

I would love to know in the comments; what is your advice on how to get out of a rut?
