Dealing With Everyday Stresses

There are lots of little things that can come up in our day-to-day lives that can have the potential to be stressful. Whether it’s missing the bus, being late for an appointment or forgetting to pack something in your bag for the day, everyday stresses can take quite an effort to stay calm through. I have been making an effort more recently to not let these stresses affect my day. Trying to ensure that everyday stresses don’t have a big impact on our state of mind is so important, and so I thought I would share some tips that have helped me deal with everyday stresses.

Something to look forward to

Having something to look forward to at the end of the day is always something that helps me deal with the stresses of everyday life. If I am having a particularly difficult day, knowing that I have plans with my friend or a new episode of my favourite show to watch really helps me. It allows me to have something positive to focus on rather than dwelling in something stressful that might have happened in my day. However big or small, having something positive to look forward to is a great way of shifting our focus from everyday stresses.

Learn to accept inconveniences

I have come to realise that there are some things that happen throughout our days that are completely out of our control. For example, if an appointment gets cancelled that we were already on our way to or if the bus is running late. Recently I have been trying to take things like this in stride more and have found that learning to accept that these things happen is a great way of dealing with inconveniences. Rather than seeing these things as frustrating, it can be really helpful to take them in stride and (even though it can be difficult at times) approach them positively, looking to find a solution.

Exercise

It is no secret that exercise can have a really positive effect on our state of mind. It is definitely something that I need to make a more regular part of my week. Exercising is a really positive way of letting out our stress. Keeping active, whether it be going for a walk or heading to a class at the gym, is really helpful for our state of mind and can have a really positive effect on the way we deal with daily stresses.

Strategies

Having strategies in place to rely on if something is particularly stressful in your day is something that I have always found to be helpful. Breathing exercises are something that have always helped me, because this is something that can be done wherever you might be; at school, at work, at home – anywhere. As well as breathing techniques to calm our minds, using guided meditation apps is so helpful for relaxation and self-care. There are so many amazing apps out there, ones I would recommend are Calm and Headspace. I have found both of these apps very helpful in the past and having strategies to look to can be so great as a solution to deal with everyday stresses.

Organisation

Being organised the night before can be a great way of preventing certain stresses from happening the next day. It took me ages of not being able to find a pair of socks to wear, forgetting to pack my lunch in my bag and leaving homework in my room due in that day to realise that organisation is so helpful to prevent these stresses in my day. Like I have said, there are some stresses that we have to deal with that are out of our control, but there are definitely also stresses that are preventable. Recently I bought a diary to write everything I had going on that week down on paper. This is something that has become so helpful in being organised and knowing what I have coming up day by day. As well as this, taking half an hour the night before to lay out our clothes for the next day and pack our bags is such a great way of preventing certain stresses from happening. Waking up and knowing everything is ready to go is a great feeling and also allows me to start the day on a good foot without having to rush around before I head out of the door.

I would love to know in the comments: how do you best deal with everyday stresses? I know that it can be really difficult to keep on top of things and to not be overwhelmed by the stresses of daily life but having certain things in place to help us stay calm can be a great way of minimising and dealing with everyday stresses.
